North Carolina‘s freshmen came through again to lead the No. 3 Tar Heels to their 13th straight victory with a 2-0 victory at No. 12 Virginia in ACC women’s action on Thursday night.
Whitney Engen and Ali Hawkins scored in a span of just over 10 minutes midway through the first half. Engen took a through ball from Elizabeth Guess, dribbled around Virginia goalkeeper Christina de Vries and finished the scoring opportunity to put the Tar Heels up in the 23rd minute. Hawkins scored her third goal of the season on a header in the 33rd minute.
UNC finished the halfway point of the ACC season perfect at 5-0-0. The Tar Heels will be looking to avenge their 2-1 loss to Duke — their only outright loss in the 2005 regular season — when they play the Blue Devils on Sunday in Durham.
No. 3 Florida State extended its unbeaten streak to four games since falling to North Carolina with a 1-0 win at Maryland. Defender Kelly Rowland scored the only goal just two minutes before the half for her fifth career game-winner.
Elsewhere in the ACC, Elizabeth Remy scored her 12th goal of the season on a breakaway in the second half to lead No. 13 Wake Forest past N.C.State, 1-0. The win was the fourth consecutive ACCvictory for the Demon Deacons, who are second in the conference behind UNC with a 4-1-0 record. Florida State is third at 3-1-1, and Duke is fourth at 3-1-0.
