No. 5 Clemson‘s slump continued as it lost to Wake Forest, 2-0, at home on Tuesday night, extending its winless streak to three games after it opened with eight straight wins, its best start in 28 years.

Wells Thompson and Steve Curfman scored second-half goals to lead the No. 7 Demon Deacons. Thompson launched a shot from the left wing about 15 yards out and beat Clemson keeper Phil Marfuggi to the far corner of the goal for his fifth goal of the year. Curfman’s insurance goal came on a penalty kick.

Wake Forest improved to 10-2-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the ACC, while Clemson fell to 8-2-1 overall, 2-2-1 in the ACC.

Despite a 29-5 edge in shots and a 17-3 advantage in corner kicks, No. 3 North Carolina had to settle for a 3-3 tie at home with unfancied High Point.

Michael Callahan, Zach Loyd and Eddie Ababio scored for the Tar Heels. UNC led, 2-1, at halftime, but the Panthers (only 2-6-3) scored twice in 55 seconds on goals by Brandon Young and Gordon Smith to take a 3-2 lead in the 61st minute. Ababio answered under three minutes later with the equalizer and final goal of the game.

Carolina was playing without star center back Andre Sherard, who did not start for just the second time in the last three seasons due to a back injury. High Point scored all three of its goals before he entered in the 70th minute.
