Carla Overbeck was a model of consistency for the U.S. women. While most of her teammates got a rest at some point during Sweden ’95, U.S. captain Carla Overbeck never left the field. “I never really wanted to,” said Overbeck, who has played every minute in 36 straight matches. Overbeck was one of only two […]

The U.S. women aren’t wasting much time. Less than two months after U.S. Women’s Cup ’95, the national team will hold a training camp Sept. 21-30 at the ARCO Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., near San Diego, to continue preparations for the 1996 Olympics. But they’ll do so without Linda Hamilton, who has retired. […]

The U.S. women lost their top player but still moved out to a two-goal lead. Unfortunately, they lost it and had to settle for a 3-3 tie with China. Tony DiCicco had plenty of time to see what his team would be like without star striker Michelle Akers. He saw that the U.S. could still […]

The U.S. women returned to action with a drubbing of Chinese Taipei in U.S. Women’s Cup ’95 to celebrate coach Tony DiCicco’s return to his hometown. It was Tony DiCicco Night in his home state, so his women’s national team supplied the fireworks in the form of a 9-0 romp past overmatched Chinese Taipei July […]

The U.S. women’s team is largely a veteran group, but one of its brightest stars is teenage sensation Tiffany Roberts. She missed her senior prom, and she’ll miss her high school graduation ceremony, too. But that won’t keep Tiffany Roberts from realizing her dream: to play on the U.S. national team in the World Cup […]

Milbrett finds her niche After leaving stardom in the collegiate ranks, former Portland forward Tiffeny Milbrett had to learn to fit in with the U.S. national team. In six months, Tiffeny Milbrett went from the queen of the University of Portland’s Merlo Field to U.S. national team neophyte to, well… Comfortable. Happy, yes. Excited, definitely. […]

Now that he’s got the job through France ’98, U.S. national team coach Steve Sampson has a new set of short-term priorities. Steve Sampson — the man who kept winning until U.S. Soccer had no choice but to give him the job of coaching the U.S. national team — has a new agenda. No, he’s […]

Four U.S. national team players joined Mexican clubs for the second half of the 1994-95 season. The quartet of Americans who went south in January could not have picked a more exciting time: The Mexican league is experiencing a renaissance. After being banned from the 1990 World Cup — its U-20 team fielded overage players […]

At the grand old age of 27, Marcelo Balboa joins the 100 club. Only 25 players have ever attained 100 caps in their careers, and Balboa is the first American to join the illustrious group, celebrating his 100th appearance with the tying goal against Nigeria. 100 caps ‘I was surprised to be the first one’ […]

Marcelo Balboa scored in Leon’s 3-2 win over UNAM Pumas in the Mexican First Division Sept. 2, three days after playing in the FIFA World All-Star Game in Tokyo. “It was a long way to go for one game,” said Balboa, the most capped player in U.S. history, “but it was worth it. It was […]

Mike Sorber, the midfielder from Missouri, has found a spot with the club that launched the careers of Mexican internationals Hugo Sanchez, Luis Garcia and Jorge Campos. After three full games in the Mexican First Division, Mike Sorber hasn’t scored yet. But his teammates — and opponents — already appreciate his hard shot. During his […]

The U.S. duo of Mike Lapper and Brian McBride is contributing to VfL Wolfsburg’s best season in history. It was well below freezing, but Wolfsburg players didn’t seem to mind. They took off their shirts and threw them into crowd and joined hands and took a bow. Later they danced half naked through hallways singing, […]
