FC Dallas signed 37-year-old Trinidad & Tobago goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, who starred for the Soca Warriors at the World Cup.
Hislop, who played at Howard University, had one of the best inidividual games of the 2006 World Cup, making numerous saves as the Soca Warriors tied Sweden, 0-0, in their World Cup debut. Hislop was expected to back up Kelvin Jack at the World Cup, but Jack was injured in warmups before the Sweden game.
“This is an exciting new challenge for me,” said Hislop of the move to MLS. “I went to school in the United States and have a lot of respect for soccer in the country.”
As a freshman at Howard, Hislop led the Bisons to the 1988 NCAA Division I final four, at which U.S. World Cup goalie Kasey Keller played for Portland. Juergen Sommer, a backup on the U.S. World Cup teams in 1994 and 1998, played for host Indiana, which beat Howard, 1-0, in the final.
After Howard, Hislop played for English clubs Reading, Newcastle, West Ham, Portsmouth and West Ham again. FC Dallas goalkeeping coach Alan Knight was a coach during Hislop’s stay at Portsmouth.
