Youth champions by the numbers
2 The Colorado Nike Rush won the under-18 and under-19 girls championships at the Snickers/U.S. Youth Soccer national final, becoming only the second girls club to capture two national titles in the same year. The Tacoma FC Flyers won U-17 and U-18 girls titles in 1996.
4 The Southern California Blues (U-16) and San Diego Surf (U-17) also won titles, giving the West a clean sweep of the four girls championships. It marked only the second time a region captured all four girls titles the same year. Region IV also won all four titles in 1996.
10 The titles by the Southern California Blues and San Diego Surf marked the 10th straight year that California teams have captured at least one boys or girls championship.
15 The West Babylon Panthers (U-17) and FC Westchester (U-16) won boys titles, New York’s first boys championships (U-19 and under) in 15 years.
29 St. Louis Scott Gallagher won the U-18 boys title, giving Missouri a record 29 national boys titles.
33 FC Delco, winner of the McGuire Cup, was Pennsylvania’s first U-19 champion in 33 years. Philadelphia Lighthouse won the last of its record five McGuire Cup titles in 1967.
63 The McGuire Cup (named after late USSF president Jimmy McGuire) celebrated its 63rd year. It’s the third-oldest national soccer competition in the United States, after the U.S. Open Cup and U.S. Amateur Cup. The U-19 boys championship was started in 1935 and has been played every year except for three (1942-44) during World War II.
