Can you imagine if every MLS head coach was a woman except for one. You can't, can you? When the Women's United Soccer Association kicked off in 2001, every head coach was a man but for one. Remember the uproar? You don't, do you? Somehow it remains acceptable to hire males for jobs that, if […]

Frugality. MLS's word of the year. As D.C. United coach Ray Hudson said, ''We need every red cent, and by the time the season starts, we'll be cutting those red cents in half.'' MLS Commissioner Don Garber, talking recently to SA Senior Editor Will Kuhns*, repeatedly referred to the tight-fisted approach. On contraction: ''Economics. It's […]

There was an abundance of defensive talent, starting with top pick Danielle Slaton, available in the WUSA Draft – a good thing. The league already has cornered most of the world's best attackers; somebody's got to shut them down. Nearly everybody got a chance to upgrade its back line – even Atlanta, even San Jose […]

Eight years ago, with great fanfare, U.S. Soccer introduced a minority-outreach program. The aim was to identify outstanding young players from overlooked clubs and leagues – even those not affiliated with the official governing organization – and bring them into the national team program. Last year, with less notice, U.S. Soccer folded its multicultural program […]

For all the benefit Brian McBride may have missed by not playing against Italy Feb. 13, perhaps there were greater forces at work. Fate hasn't been kind to McBride, so perhaps the first two months of 2002 have been Fate's way of balancing the scales. In the Gold Cup won by the U.S. McBride finished […]

The emotion and energy that usually accompanies draft day was muted this year when MLS teams selected 65 new players at ABC's All-Star Cafe. Maybe it was the smaller venue than recent years or the lack of a flashy video montage featuring last season's top rookies. Maybe it was the limited number of hopeful players […]

The scores were all the same in four MLS games on April 6: After celebrating their 2001 title win with a pregame ring ceremony, the San Jose Earthquakes won their home opener, 2-1, against New England in front of a disappointing crowd (announced as 10,104).
