Nation’s leading scorer realizes dream

Quinnipiac’s Graciano Brito isn’t your typical college star. He never played organized soccer before entering college. Three years later, he leads all NCAA Division I scorers with nine goals — and two hat tricks — in six games, but he still commutes 45 minutes each day between home and school and often works until midnight as a clerk at a local supermarket.

[HISTORY] More than a quarter century after they played pioneering roles in women’s soccer, members of the University of Oregon’s 1980 and 1981 teams will be honored at ceremonies Friday during the Ducks’ game with Portland. It will be the first time that Oregon has honored its 1980 varsity team, and it will also be the first time that the 1981 team has been formally recognized with varsity status and players granted letterman status.

What They’re Saying

“I have decided that it is necessary to take firm action to reflect the fact that Ricardo Clark‘s violent kick to Carlos Ruiz in last weekend’s game against FC Dallas, while out of character, is unacceptable behavior from an MLS player. In taking this action, Major League Soccer is sending a signal that it will not accept reckless and dangerous behavior on its fields. If there is a repeat of this kind of behavior by any MLS player, even firmer sanctions can be expected in the future.”

— MLS Commissioner Don Garber on the record nine-game suspension he gave Ricardo Clark for kicking Ruiz during last Sunday’s FC Dallas-Houston game.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: International Soccer Headliners

Arsenal’s fast start has led to comparisons between Arsene Wenger‘s young Gunners and his “Invincibles” of four seasons ago. Manchester City’s Brazilian, Elano, is one of the best summer signings in the English Premier League. After Marseille’s victory at Liverpool on Wednesday, Belgian coach Eric Gerets must get down to the work he was this week hired for at the French club. Sunday’s River Plate-Boca Juniors derby isn’t the only sporting event that has Argentines talking.

U.S. ABROAD: Mixed results in UEFA Cup

Of the seven Americans to play Thursday in UEFA Cup action, only three survived to reach the group stage. Ramiro Corrales and Danny Califf had reason to celebrate, as did Tim Howard after a dangerous trip to Ukraine. But Oguchi Onyewu saw red at Standard Liege, and Brad Friedel’s Blackburn Rovers quickly exited from the UEFA Cup. Heavy losses end the European campaigns of Michael Bradley and Charlie Davies.

MLS hits gut-check time

[TV PREVIEWS] Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney breaks down the action in MLS, which begins Friday when Kansas City hosts D.C. United. It’s gut-check time for the Wizards and the Fire, who can solidify if not confirm postseason reservations by winning at home, and must-win time for skidding homies Columbus and Colorado. The Galaxy takes its improbable but not impossible playoff quest to Houston, and the 2005 expansion teams renew their unique rivalry in Utah. Toronto has a whole lot of Mo’mentum after beating RBNY.

Red Bulls leave barmy BMO rebuffed yet again

If New York coach Bruce Arena told his team it had to break its recent trend of tying three straight games, 2-2, the message came through garbled. Poised again to clinch a playoff spot by winning, again the Red Bulls faltered. They scored an own goal and had a player ejected as ex-New York right back Marvell Wynne and his mates took them down, 2-1, at BMO Field in front of the usual cacophonous crowd of red-clad crazies and a national TV audience.

David Beckham returned to training with his L.A. Galaxy teammates on Wednesday for the first time since injuring his knee in August, but Coach Frank Yallop warned against the possibility of his returning to the England squad for its upcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against Estonia and Russia. “He’s not even played any competitive games,” Yallop […]

Travails of a two-sport star

Mark Buchholz should be applauded for his accomplishments as a two-sport star at Clemson. On most Friday nights, the Georgia native plays for the Tiger soccer team, for which he is a four-year starter. On Saturdays, he’s the field goal kicker on Tommy Bowden‘s football team. Problem is, recent misses on the gridiron have local pundits demanding that Buchholz quit soccer.

[MILESTONE] N.C. State men’s coach George Tarantini recorded his 200th career victory Wednesday afternoon when the Wolfpack downed visiting High Point, 5-0, at Method Road. The Argentine-born Tarantini is in his 22th year as the Wolfpack’s head coach. In his early years at N.C. State, the fiery Tarantini, whose younger brother Alberto played on Argentina’s 1978 World Cup championship team, built some of the most talented teams in the history of college soccer.

Newcomers Emilio, Angel lead MLS scorers

[MLS STATS] With three games left, D.C. United’s Brazilian striker Luciano Emilio is the first MLS player to score 20 regular-season since Carlos Ruiz (24) and Taylor Twellman (23) did in 2002. With three more strikes Emilio would tie D.C. United’s single-season record, set by Raul Diaz Arce in 1996. The MLS record is 27, set by Roy Lassiter while with Tampa Bay in 1996. The second leading scorer this season is another South American newcomer: New York’s Juan Pablo Angel

Bulls hope to clinch playoff spot in Toronto

[TV PREVIEW] As they survey BMO Field and see the crowd and hear its passion, the players, coaches and officials of Red Bull New York must wonder if it will ever come to pass for them, this seemingly ideal melding of location, facility, and fandom. Red Bull Park is still years away. League games in the Meadowlands are ridiculously expensive and drained of atmosphere, except for the nine-goal appearance of David Beckham in early August.

Quakes name John Doyle GM and ponder venues

The two men most responsible for the rebirth of the San Jose Earthquakes weren’t in attendance, but those who were there- including former Clash and Quakes defender John Doyle, who was named Wednesday as the team’s new general manager – heaped praise upon Oakland A’s co-owners John Fisher and Lewis Wolff, the money men behind the MLS expansion team. “I think a lot of it comes back to local ownership,” says A’s president Michael Crowley, who will fill the same role for the Quakes. “The team that was here previously never had that and I think you need that in any sport, baseball or soccer or whatever sport you name. Or whatever business you name, for that matter.”
