How to handle disgruntled players
By Eric Steege Youth soccer players who invest countless hours to improve conditioning and technical skills and sacrifice their spring break and summer vacations for the soccer field expect to play on game day. When hard work fails to be "rewarded" with playing time, an athlete can quickly become frustrated and unmotivated. Unfortunately, many players […]

NCAA Division I Men’s Wednesday Results

No. 4 SMU has a two-point lead on unbeaten Tulsa and Memphis in the Conference USA. No. 19 Creighton opened up a three-point lead on idle Drake, Eastern Illinois and Bradley in the Missouri Valley. The only ranked team to fall to an unranked team was No. 23 Furman, which lost for only the second time this season when it fell at Clemson, 2-1. For all Wednesday’s scores …

What They’re Saying
“I always say that one day I can play over there. I would love to. But it’s still early. Don’t get me wrong, I just love the U.S. I don’t know why. I love the way you live. I love American sports. For me, it’s a dream to go to training and then see a game of football, basketball, whatever game. For me, New York is the best city in the world.”

Mexico’s Tri stunned at L.A. Coliseum
It was supposed to be Los Angeles fans’ first glimpse of the great Mexico team of the future with the Spanish-based trio of Andres Guardado, Carlos Vela and Barcelona starlet Giovani Dos Santos in the starting lineup and New Mexican Edgar Castillo coming off the bench. But what the 42,350 fans saw on Wednesday night was one of the most stunning defeats in the history of the Mexican national team program. Guatemala beat the Tri for the first time in 40 years, winning, 3-2, in an incident-filled game that featured six red cards and seven yellow cards.
Another U.S. victory over Mexico

Galaxy begins final push to improbable quest
David Beckham is healthy enough to be considered for selection. Give the Galaxy credit for being as vaguely specific as possible as it plays another must-not-lose match on national television. As long as it avoids defeat, the Galaxy will head to Chicago for the season finale Sunday knowing a win clinches a playoff spot. It trails the Fire by four points, which it can wipe out by either a) winning both games, or b) tying New York and beating Chicago.

USA ends slide with win over pathetic Swiss
After losing five games in a row, the USA will take a victory any way it can get it. The young Americans patiently held off a Swiss team short on players and — even worse — short on ideas and came away with a 1-0 victory Wednesday in Basel. In a friendly with few clear chances, the outcome was decided in the 86th minute on a goal that followed a well-constructed setup and a fortunate bounce.

England and Scotland crack on the road
[EURO 2008 QUALIFYING] England was 21 minutes away from clinching a berth in the 2008 European Championship when it collapsed in “five minutes of madness” and lost to Russia, 2-1, in Moscow. The loss took England’s chances of qualifying out of its hands. Scotland was rolling after wins over France and Ukraine, but it lost at Georgia, 2-0, and will probably need to beat Italy on Nov. 17 to have any chance of qualifying.
