Galaxy dreadful in Hawaii opener

[PAN-PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP] There wasn’t much “sexy soccer” so dear to Ruud Gullit to be found on display from his Los Angeles Galaxy for a small crowd on hand on Day 1 of the Pan-Pacific Championship in Honolulu. Indeed, the new collection of Galaxy players supporting David Beckham — who went the entire 90 minutes — looked quite dreadful in a 1-0 loss to undermanned Japanese club Gamba Osaka. By comparison, the MLS champion Houston Dynamo was in mid-season form, coasting to a 3-0 victory over Australia’s Sydney FC.

Italy Reacts to Inter’s Loss

The Guardian translates the headlines in Italy following Inter Milan's 2-0 Champions League defeat against Liverpool at Anfield. Notwithstanding the harsh sending off of Marco Materazzi after 30 minutes, the assessments of Inter's play were rather damning. "Bitter but fair," said Alberto Cerruti of the Gazzetta dello Sport. Houston seeks scoring punch; L.A. to test newcomers

[PAN-PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP] Many of the players will be rusty but each team has its own motivation. The Houston Dynamo is two-time defending league champion; the Los Angeles Galaxy has missed the playoffs both of those years. Gamba Osaka, like Houston, will play in a regional club competition next month; Sydney FC thumped the Galaxy, 5-3, in a friendly a few months ago that featured a classic Beckham goal from a free kick, and now gets a chance to take on the American champ. Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney sizes up the field.

Winter Transfer Moves

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Robert Adam, a 6-2 central defender from Northern California youth powerhouse De Anza Force, signed with Scottish club Hearts’ youth academy. “Robert is a big, strong, fast, skillful center defender and it comes as no surprise that Hearts would sign him as a professional for their U-19 team.” said Jeff Baicher, president of the De Anza Force. The Canadian-born Adam signed a contract with the Edinburgh club through the 2009-10 season. Other Americans on the move in Europe include goalie Colin Burns, who signed with Sweden’s Ljungskile SK, while former Creighton University player Tony Odorisio joined Finnish Premier League club FC KooTeePee. For all the winter overseas transfers involving Americans …

[OFF THE POST] A Web site campaign launched less than a year ago has completed its takeover an English minor league club, which will be run by the 28,000 fans who paid $68 a share. The MyFC scheme, which limited fans to one share each, has culminated with the ownership of fifth tier club Ebbsfleet United. Via the Internet, the fan owners will “manage” the team by selecting the starting lineups for the club’s head coach.

“If you have anything worth burning, bring it down!”

— A plea from English club Rochdale, whose fans worked desperately to thaw its frozen field in time for Tuesday’s game against Notts County by placing 40 oil drums on it and fueling fires in them throughout the night. The effort, however, suffered from a lack of coal and wood and the game was postponed. Fans of the English League Two (fourth division) club are now trying to keep the flames burning to make the field playable for this weekend’s game against Wycombe Wanderers. (Rochdale AFC)
