Quakes not desperate to fill empty roster slots

[MLS] The 2008 Major League Soccer opener is only 16 days away, yet Quakes head coach Frank Yallop insists there’s no rush to stock his 18-man roster. Midfielder Shea Salinas, taken in the SuperDraft with the first pick of the second round, has signed to bring the senior squad to 15. With five developmental players, Yallop doesn’t have enough bodies for a 11-v-11 scrimmage unless he and assistant coach Ian Russell join in, but he’s taking his time.

Mexico’s Hugo Sanchez asked to quit

Hugo Sanchez always had a big ego. When he finally was given the job of Mexico national team coach — a job he had coveted for years — he promised he wouldn’t disappoint, boasting that Mexico would win the Gold Cup and earn an Olympic medal. Well, Mexico lost to the USA, 2-1, in last year’s Gold Cup final and won’t be going to Beijing Olympics. Following the U-23 Tri’s shock third-place finish, behind Guatemala and Canada, in the group stage of Concacaf qualifying, the Mexican press hammered Sanchez.

What They’re Saying

“I speak for all of Argentina when I say that we do not fear the altitude. All of us have to play where we were born, my brothers and sisters. Not even God can ban that — much less [FIFA president Sepp] Blatter.”

— Former Argentine great Diego Maradona after scoring three goals to lead a team of ex-Argentine players to a 7-4 win over Bolivian President Evo Morales‘ team of former Bolivian greats, palace staffers, security guards and local television newcasters in a charity match played before 25,000 fans in La Paz’s Hernando Siles Stadium, high in the Andes at 11,800 feet. FIFA effectively banned international games from taking place in La Paz after ratifying a rule requiring players to arrive at the host city a week before international games above 9,000 feet and two weeks for matches higher than 9,800 feet to allow time to adjust to the thin air.

Beckham Passes English Test

David Beckham’s desire to play for his country has never been in question — neither has his ability to deliver a ball with accuracy. Now that the former England captain is 32, the questions are over his fitness and mental sharpness. Luckily for both Beckham and England manager Fabio Capello, who sent general manager Franco […]

Galaxy’s Gaping Depth Problem

If you take David Beckham, Landon Donovan and Carlos Ruiz out of the picture, the Los Angeles Galaxy’s roster looks pretty threadbare, says ESPN’s Steve Davis. Aside from the marquee trio, there are maybe three or four guys you could call genuine professionals. “The remainder of the roster is a selection of MLS day laborers,” […]

Record six Americans play in EPL game

[AMERICANS ABROAD] For the first time ever, six Americans played in an English Premier League game when Fulham edged Everton, 1-0, on Sunday. Brian McBride scored for the Cottagers on a header in the second half, beating fellow Yank Tim Howard in the Everton goal for the game’s only tally. McBride, Kasey Keller and Eddie Johnson started for Fulham, and Carlos Bocanegra and Clint Dempsey came on as substitutes. Fulham’s five Americans were a record for one EPL team.

Bye-bye, Beijing, for Mexico

[OLYMPIC QUALIFYING] It was an afternoon fans won’t quickly forget at the Home Depot Center. Canada, with its hastily assembled team of no names, and Mexico, with its Golden Generation, were in a race to run up the score and earn the second berth from Group B — and a date with the USA Thursday — in the all-important semifinals of Concacaf Olympic men’s qualifying. Canada beat group winner Guatemala, 5-0, to put the pressure on Hugo Sanchez‘s Mexico U-23s, who could only beat Haiti, 5-1, in the nightcap and were eliminated. Thus ended Mexico’s dream of its first Olympic medal. Its exit immediately sparked speculation that Sanchez will be gone by the end of the month.

The final U.S. Olympic hurdle is … Canada!

As it expected, the U.S. under-23 national team faces a showdown with a border rival for a spot at the 2008 Olympic Games, yet not expected is which neighbor that will be. The U.S. won Group A Saturday by squeezing past Honduras, 1-0, with a stoppage-time penalty kick from Eddie Gaven, and then it awaited the outcome in Group B, where to everyone’s amazement Canada captured second place ahead of Mexico.

UEFA’s Wrong-Headed CL Reforms

There are only four teams in England with a realistic shot of winning the Premier League trophy every season. UEFA’s egalitarian president, Michel Platini, doesn’t like that very much, but the London Times’ Martin Samuel says he should probably be more concerned about the domestic game in Greece, for example, where Olympiakos has won 10 […]

Arsenal to Face Liverpool in Champions League Quarterfinals

The Champions League quarterfinal draw pitted together some familiar foes: Arsenal will take on fellow English Premier League club Liverpool while Manchester United drew Italy’s Roma for the third time in two years. Barcelona and Chelsea were handed the easiest draws; they face Germany’s Schalke 04 and Turkey’s Fenerbahce, respectively. Across England, the Arsenal-Liverpool draw […]
