Defending Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich suffered an embarrassing defeat on Wednesday when it loss to last-place Hannover, 1-0, at home and fell to fifth place, six points behind leader Werder Bremen, a 2-1 winner at Nuremberg on Tuesday.

Hannover, which entered the game with one win in 10 games, was gifted a goal at the end of the first half when Argentine Martin Demichelis coughed up the ball, and Jiri Stajner broke clear and fed Hungarian Szabolcs Huszti for an easy tap-in.

Bayern, which has struggled all season to score, rarely threatened.

“You could see once again tonight that we have problems when we come up against very defensive teams,” Bayern coach Felix Magath said. “We did too little in the first half. We didn’t put enough pressure on them. We did more in the second half, tried a lot more, but we didn’t create many clear chances then either.”

Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel was one of the few players to create opportunities.

“If I’d been in the crowd,” van Bommel said afterward, “I would have booed as well.”

Hannover moved into 15th place, out of the relegation zone, one point ahead of Hamburg, which lost at second-place Stuttgart, 2-0.
