Washington’s Kevin Forrest, the Pac-10 Player of the Year, and Brown’s Andrew Daniels were the scoring stars of the first round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Tournament, leading their teams to victory with hat tricks.

Forrest scored three goals — the first two 75 seconds part in the first half — to lead UW to a 3-0 win over Creighton, which was making its 15th straight tournament appearance. The hat trick was the second of the season for Forrest, who has scored 16 goals in 18 games.

Daniels’ first two goals came before and after a goal by Nick Elenz-Martin as Brown blitzed Adelphi for three goals in a span of 223 seconds and won, 4-1, to earn a date at No. 1 Duke on Wednesday night. Daniels couldn’t remember scoring a hat trick since playing indoors in his high school days.

NCAA debutants Fairfield and Gardner-Webb advanced to Wednesday’s second round.

Fairfield upset Connecticut, 2-1, on Jimmy Gaughan‘s goal in the 83rd minute to give the school its first NCAA tournament victory in any sport. Huskies coach Ray Reid termed his team’s first loss ever to Fairfield an end to “a completely disappointing season.”

The one-two goalkeeping punch of Tyler Kettering and Dane Geraci was the difference for Gardner-Webb. Kettering’s nine saves against UAB made him the Atlantic Sun all-time career saves leader, but he gave way in the shootout for Geraci, a redshirt sophomore who stopped three of the four Blazers shots, and lead the Bulldogs into the second round with a 3-1 shootout victory after the game ended 1-1.

The other first-year tournament teams lost. St. John’s beat Monmouth, 1-0, on another Ryan Soroka goal, is fifth game-winner in the Red Storm’s last six games, all shutout wins. Loyola (Ill.) fell to Northern Illinois, 1-0, on Justin McGrane‘s overtime goal.

Several other games went right down to the wire. All-American Scott Jones connected on a free kick in the last 30 seconds to give UNC Greensboro a 2-1 victory over Virginia Tech. Stephen Brown scored with only 18 seconds remaining to give New Mexico, last year’s runner-up, a 1-0 win at San Francisco. Mark Schmiegel‘s shot from the left wing just over five minutes into overtime deflected off George Mason’s Michael Vallie and into an empty net to give Bucknell a 1-0 win at GMU, its first NCAA Tournament victory since 1974,
