Helio dos Anjos became the fourth coach to depart struggling Brazilian club Sao Caetano this season when he quit after its 2-0 loss at home to Gremio, the seventh loss in seven games since he took over.
“I couldn’t go on losing,” he said.
Sao Caetano, runner-up in the 2002 Libertadores Cup, is 19th in the 20-team Campeonato Brasileiro. Amazingly, Sao Caetano isn’t the most volatile Brazilian club. Five Fluminense coaches have been fired or quit.
Dos Anjos was the 38th coaching victim of the season. Only six of the 20 teams in the Campeonato Brasileiro haven’t changed coaches. They occupy the top six spots: Sao Paulo, Gremio, Internacional, Parana, Santos and Vasco da Gama.
In August, former Miami Fusion coach Ivo Wortmann took charge of Juventude — the ninth Brazilian club he’s coached since leaving the MLS club in 2000. He also spent six weeks at Russian club Moscow Dynamo in 2005
