Upstate New York schools Nazareth and Medaille played a 20-round shootout before Nazareth prevailed in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Tournament on Saturday.
Nazareth had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but the host Mavericks answered each time, the second time on Ryan Mangino‘s Division III-leading 34th goal of the season.
Regulation ended, 2-2, and two scoreless overtime periods resulted in the game going to penalty kicks, where Nazareth and Medaille each scored on four of their first five chances. The shootout then went to sudden death as the teams continued to trade penalty kicks. Medaille squandered three chances to advance as Golden Flyers goalie Alex Kilroy made clutch saves. J.J. Bilinski also stopped three penalties for Medaille.
Seven players — Ed Babcock, Christopher Lofgren, Jeremy Bergan, Scott Cavanaugh, Andrew Wirfel, Nick Proukou and Justino Flores — converted two penalties. After Flores, Nazareth’s 20th shooter, scored, Medaille’s Michel Mendez shot went wide left to end the match and send Nazareth to the next round, 16-15, on penalty kicks.
