Five college freshmen and one college junior are among the 16 players called up for the U.S. under-20 men’s national team camp Oct. 8-12 in Sunrise, Fla.
Coach Thomas Rongen called up goalies Brian Perk (UCLA), Joe Willis (Denver) and defenders Nick Cardenas (San Diego State), Amaechi Igwe (Santa Clara) and midfielder Stephen McCarthy (Santa Clara), all freshmen. South Florida junior Rodrigo Hidalgo will also attend the camp.
The other 10 players are professionals — seven from MLS (including Freddy Adu) and three from overseas (Michael Bradley and Robbie Rogers of Dutch club Heerenveen and Johann Smith of the EPL’s Bolton Wanderers).
The camp will include a closed-door match against the Haiti U-23 team.
