U.S. national team regulars Aly Wagner, Cat Reddick and Hope Solo head the 18-player roster that will represent the United States at the 2002 Nordic Cup, the world's premier under-21 women's competition. Wagner, a playmaker who has emerged as one the U.S. women's top attacking players, is one of three Santa Clara University players selected by U.S. coach Jerry Smith, who also coaches the NCAA champion Broncos. Midfielder Devvyn Hawkins and forward Veronica Zepeda also are on the roster. Three players from runner-up North Carolina also were selected: defender Reddick and forwards Mary McDowell and Alyssa Ramsey. Wagner, Reddick and Solo, a goalkeeper from the University of Washington, will join the squad in Finland following the July 21 U.S. national team friendly against Norway in Blaine, Minn. Six other U.S. players — Hawkins, Ramsey, Zepeda, defenders Nandi Pryce and Ally Marquand, and forward Christie Welsh — also have seen action with the full U.S. team. Wagner and Hawkins will fill two permitted ''overage'' slots. The tournament will be held July 25-31. The United States, which has won four of the past five Nordic Cup championships and five overall, will face Finland and Denmark's U-21 teams and Greece's national women's team in first-round action of the eight-team tournament.
