It seems that FIFA President Sepp Blatter wants the fairy tale-turned-nightmare that was Zinedine Zidane’s World Cup to continue towards some kind of satisfactory conclusion of his own making. According to Reuters, FIFA is considering Cape Town’s Robben Island, the Alcatraz-like prison island in Cape Town where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, to be the stage for a reconciliation between Zidane and Marco Materazzi, the Italian defender who goaded Zidane into the head-butt that was to be his final contribution on a soccer field. “We are working on bringing together Materazzi and Zidane,” Blatter told reporters before a post-World Cup meeting in Berlin with several national coaches. “There are different possibilities and one of them is Robben Island in South Africa where [former South African President] Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years.” One wonders why Zidane, who has since retired from the game, would feel at all compelled to fly to South Africa for a reconciliation that is purely for FIFA’s benefit. The former three-time World Player of the Year has refused to speak further about the matter on several occasions after agreeing to a live interview on French television following the World Cup. FIFA fined Zidane roughly $6,000 for the incident and Materazzi about $4,000. A former inmate at Robben Island named Tokyo Sexwale, who is a part of South Africa’s World Cup organizing committee, suggested that the reunion should take place at the site. “This would bring to an end this story between Materazzi and Zidane,” Blatter said.
