San Jose and Washington set team records for goals in one game on Saturday, and Carolina romped in Atlanta to move back into second place in the WUSA. The CyberRays pulled out a wild, 4-3 triumph over visiting New York as Brandi Chastain scored two goals and set up Katia's winning penalty kick after moving from right back to forward in the second half. Washington got two goals from Abby Wambach and another from Mia Hamm in its 4-0 rout of visiting San Diego, which lost its second in a row under interim coach Kevin Crow. Carolina remained unbeaten in five meetings with host Atlanta, getting second-half goals from Unni Lehn and Birgit Prinz for a 3-1 comeback victory. First-place Philadelphia also won, beating Boston, 1-0, on a Marinette Pichon goal. In Saturday's WUSA action: San Jose 4 New York 3: Tiffeny Milbrett, held goalless in five previous meetings with the CyberRays, netted her second career hat trick, but the Power (2-7-1, 7 points) couldn't hold off the CyberRays before 6,605 at Spartan Stadium. Brandi Chastain scored goals in the 66th and 70th minutes to give San Jose (5-3-2, 17 points) one-goal advantages, then set up Katia's 88th-minute PK when she was fouled by Kristy Whelchel after slipping past New York goalkeeper Nicole Williams at the top of the Power box. Whelchel, who had an otherwise outstanding game for New York, was red-carded. Chastain started the game at right back in the CyberRays' customary 5-3-2 formation, but she moved up front as Coach Ian Sawyers switched to a 4-3-3 after halftime. Milbrett, who took over the WUSA scoring leadership with 18 points (seven goals, four assists), converted a 35th-minute penalty kick, the first goal the Power has scored against San Jose in five regular-season meetings. San Jose pulled even when second-half substitute Maren Hendershot-Brown headed home a Michelle French cross in the 54th minute. It was Hendershot-Brown's first WUSA goal. Chastain lobbed a French long ball over Williams to give San Jose a 2-1 lead 14 minutes later, but Milbrett answered it in the 69th. Chastain scored her second goal after a poor Wynne McIntosh clearance a minute later, but Milbrett tied the score, 3-3, when Rapp nodded a Linda Ormen ball onto her path in the 83rd minute. New York coach Patrick Farmer was sent off six minutes into the second half after heatedly disagreeing with referee Mark Arblaster on an advantage decision. The loss was New York's seventh in nine games. San Jose, which scored nine goals in its first eight games, has netted seven in its past two. Philadelphia 1 Boston 0: Pichon's fifth-minute goal stood up for the Charge (6-1-2, 20 points), which doubled its lead in the WUSA standings to two points with a victory before 5,465 at Villanova Stadium. Pichon ran onto a long ball from Erica Iverson and beat Breakers goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc for her fifth goal of the season as Philly extended its unbeaten streak to four games. The Frenchwoman nearly scored another, but LeBlanc snuffed a 54th-minute breakaway. The loss was the second this week for Boston (2-4-4, 10 points), which fell at Washington on Wednesday night. Carolina 3 Atlanta 1: Danielle Fotopoulos scored her sixth goal of the season, and Unni Lehn and Birgit Prinz added tallies as the visiting Courage (5-1-3, 18 points) vaulted past the Beat (5-4-1, 18 points) into second place before 5,651 at Herndon Stadium. The victory kept Carolina unbeaten against Atlanta in five meetings while snapping the Beat's five-game unbeaten streak. Homare Sawa gave Atlanta a 32nd-minute lead, but Fotopoulos finished a loose ball just before halftime to even things. The goal ended Beat goalkeeper Briana Scurry's shutout streak at 375 minutes. Lehn netted the winner in the 58th minute after Tiffany Roberts poked the ball to her during a scramble in the box. Prinz scored her second goal in three games 20 minutes later. Washington 4 San Diego 0: Wambach scored two goals and assisted on another, and Hamm netted her second goal in as many games as the Freedom (4-4-3, 15 points) routed the skidding Spirit (2-6-2, 8 points) before 5,090 at RFK Stadium. A Pu Wei corner kick caromed off a leaping Wambach's rib cage and into the goal to push Washington ahead in the 26th minute, and the Freedom added three goals in the final 11 minutes to turn a tight game into a romp. San Diego lost forward Shannon MacMillan (right foot strain) and defenders Joy Fawcett (left calf strain) and Rhiannon Tanaka (left hamstring strain) to injuries during the match. Anne Makinen scored off a Wambach cross in the 79th minute for her first goal of the season, and Hamm — playing in her second match since returning from knee surgery — converted a penalty kick two minutes later. The spot kick was awarded when midfielder Ann Cook was taken down by San Diego defender Kim Pickup. Wambach added an 89th-minute goal for the Freedom.
