Substitute Ahn Jung Hwan's 77th minute header gave South Korea a 1-1 tie with the USA in the June 5 Group D showdown. Ahn beat Jeff Agoos to a free kick from 45 yards out to redirect the ball from 8 yards out into the right corner of keeper Brad Friedel's goal. The USA took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute through Clint Mathis, who drilled a low 16-yard, left-footed shot into the right corner of the net. He received a chipped pass at the edge of the penalty area from John O'Brien, who had sprinted through Korean terrority. In the 39th minute, following a foul by Jeff Agoos, Friedel became the first goalkeeper at the 2002 World Cup to save a penalty kick. He dived right to thwart Eul Young Lee's attempt. Friedel also denied Ki Hyeon Seol with close-range saves off on both sides of halftime. Unmarked Yong Soo Choi could have given South Korea the win, but shot high from 6 yards in 89th minute. South Korea leads Group D with 4 points and a plus-2 goal difference. The USA is in second with 4 points and a plus-1 goal difference. ''If someone had told us we'd get four points after two games, I think we would have taken it,'' said Friedel. USA lineup: Friedel, Sanneh, Pope, Agoos, Hejduk, Reyna, O'Brien, Donovan, Beasley (Lewis), Mathis (Wolff), McBride.
