US Club Soccer, an organization created two years ago to serve the nation's elite youth clubs, is launching a championship for U-14 boys and U-14 girls. The tournament begins in late summer championship and will culminate with finals to be held in conjunction with MLS Cup 2002 in Foxboro, Mass. The two title-winners will receive a free 9-day trip to train at a European soccer academy. U.S. Youth Soccer, the traditional governing body of American youth soccer, currently sponsors national championships in six age groups for both boys and girls. US Club Soccer, which is also a U.S. Soccer Federation member, plans to add championship for more age groups next year. Clubs can be members of both organizations. “Our goal in this tournament is to take a different approach than is done in other such events,” said Bill Sage, US Club Soccer executive director. “First of all, it's a club tournament for our members, so rosters will be 26 players and players can play up within the club, with a game roster then designated for each game. Secondly, we will not determine state champions, but proceed directly to a regional format to provide a higher level of competition throughout. As a national organization, state boundaries are not an issue for us.” US Club Soccer: http://www.usclubsoccer.org/
