FIFA and the Kirch Group have signed an agreement covering U.S. English-language television and radio rights to the 2002 and 2006 World Cup. These rights were held out of the deal FIFA struck with ISL and Kirch covering the rights to the next two World Cups. The Spanish-language television and radio rights are held by Univision and Futbol de Primera, respectively. The Kirch Group has already started negotiations with U.S. broadcasters on marketing the rights and is expecting to conclude an agreement by the beginning of June. The strong start by the United States in the Hexagonal will further the prospect that U.S. rights are sold. The combination of the kickoff times for the 2002 World Cup in the middle of the night in the United States and the soft advertising climate had cast doubt on the ability of FIFA to strike a deal with a U.S. English-language television network. ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 have broadcast the last two World Cups.
