You could have called yesterday’s English Premier League clash between Reading and Manchester City the first of several “American” derbies this season. Sort of. Reading and Man City are two of three EPL clubs with at least two Americans on its roster. Winger Bobby Convey and goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann play for Reading, midfielders Claudio Reyna and DaMarcus Beasley, a recent signing, play for City, and forward Brian McBride plays for Fulham along with U.S. national team center back Carlos Bocanegra. All six figure to play prominent roles for their clubs this season. McBride and Bocanegra recently orchestrated the late comeback that saw Fulham take all three points against Newcastle at St. James Park this past weekend. At home to City yesterday, Reading’s American duo was instrumental in seeing off a tough challenge from Manchester City: Bobby Convey supplied Ivar Ingimarsson with a beautiful cross for the game winning header in the 23rd minute, while Hahnemann came up with a string of key saves to keep the score line at 1-0. Reading now has six points from four games, just behind Fulham, with 7. Man City, which started former U.S. national team captain Claudio Reyna in midfield, has four points from four games. There are 13 Americans playing in England’s top flight this season. The others are goalkeepers Brad Friedel and Tim Howard, at Blackburn and Everton, respectively, West Ham defender Jonathan Spector, Johann Smith at Bolton, Cory Gibbs at Charlton, Jay DeMerit of Watford, and Manchester United’s Guiseppe Rossi, on loan at Newcastle.
