BY RIDGE MAHONEY Major League Soccer has postponed a decision on resumption of play until tomorrow afternoon. League officials and team general managers conferred today on a telephone conference call but because of several factors, including uncertainty about when the nation’s airports will be opened for regular operations, they ended the call without reaching a resolution. “Logistics, security and appropriateness are the three major areas of concern,” said Chicago GM Peter Wilt, who was on the conference call today and will participate again tomorrow. “The safety of players, coaches and fans is obviously a primary concern. “On the one hand, we have to decide that if out of respect for the people whose family members and friends lost their lives this is not the proper time for celebrations or games, but on the other hand we should show the terrorists that they can’t take away our freedoms and our way of life. “Everyone understands both views.” Four games scheduled for Wednesday night have been postponed. The regular season concludes this weekend with six games involving all 12 MLS teams. The Kansas City Wizards are playing today in Lima, Peru against Sporting Cristal in the Merconorte Cup tournament. The players and team officials departed Monday, a day before the Federal Aviation Administration ordered all U.S. airports to be shut down in the wake of airplane terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, Va. Kansas City is scheduled to conclude the regular season at home Sunday against Colorado. Most teams held regular practice sessions today. “The players came in yesterday but we just sat around watching the television,” said San Jose coach Frank Yallop. “It’s been a shock obviously, with players trying to make sure the people closest to them are all right. “We trained for about an hour and a half and you kind of forget about it, but then you go out to your car and you start to remember. It’s not easy.” The eight playoff teams have been decided. Playoff matchups could change pending results in the 10 games yet to be played. The playoffs are scheduled to start next Wednesday. The league has several options: Declare the regular season over and resume action next week with the playoffs; cancel tonight’s games and play the weekend matches; or reschedule tonight’s games and/or the weekend games to complete the regular season. Eight teams have two games remaining. The other four teams have one match left. Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Jose, Columbus, the MetroStars, Kansas City and Dallas are in the playoffs. New England, Tampa Bay, Colorado and D.C. United are out. Commissioner Don Garber is expected to make an announcement tomorrow afternoon following the conference call. “Don’s got a lot on his plate right now,” said Yallop. “Whatever the league decides to do, we’ll support it.”
