Santa Clara won one showdown, Texas lost another, and Stanford was upset in Arizona as most of the Soccer America Top 20 — everyone below No. 1 North Carolina — is rearranged following Week 10’s results. The Tar Heels (16-0-0) are one week from being the No. 1-ranked team in every SA Top 20 from preseason to the playoffs; they’ll open the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament Thursday against North Carolina State. Santa Clara jumped switched spots with Portland, moving from No. 3 to No. 2, following an impressive 2-1 triumph in their West Coast Conference clash Friday at the Broncos’ Buck Shaw Stadium. Texas falls from fifth to 11th after Texas A&M, which climbs from seventh to fifth, reeled off a 6-0 shocker in Austin. Stanford, upset by Arizona State in overtime, falls from fourth to eighth. Florida’s 4-1 romp over Clemson pushes the Gators from No. 8 to No. 6, with the Tigers falling from 12th to 15th. UCLA moves from sixth to fourth after beating Washington and Washington State; the Huskies bounced back by pummeling USC and move from 15th to 16th. Other teams making impressive gains include Notre Dame (ninth to seventh after beating St. John’s in a Big East Conference quarterfinal), Virginia (13th to 10th, 2-0 over Wake Forest), Nebraska (14th to 12th, 4-0 over Iowa State), St. Mary’s (16th to 14th, 3-0 over San Diego) and West Virginia (19th to 17th, 2-0 over Miami in Big East quarterfinals). Florida State returned to the Top 20 after falling out last week, climbing to 18th after its 2-0 victory over Maryland and a 5-1 romp at Jacksonville. Georgia, ranked 20th five weeks ago, is 19th after a 2-1 victory over Tennessee, which fell from 18th to 20th. Last week’s No. 17 Princeton (1-1 tie at Penn) and No. 20 Maryland fell from the Top 20.
