The following supplements the articles found on page 18-19 of the April 23, 2001 issue of Soccer America Magazine. BY SCOTT FRENCH The Americans’ foes at the CONCACAF Under-17 Group A qualifying tournament April 18-22 at Robert R. Hermann Stadium on the Saint Louis University campus: Jamaica (April 18, 7 p.m. CT): The Young Boyz romped through Caribbean qualifying, going 6-0 and outscoring their competition — which didn’t include Trinidad & Tobago, automatic qualifier as host of the World Championship — by a 27-2 margin. Key players for Coach Clovis de Oliveira include Ramon-Dee Bailey, Kevin Wilson and goalkeeper Richard McCallum. Jamaica’s last U-17 team finished ahead of the United States in its CONCACAF qualifying event and participated in the 1999 World Championship in New Zealand. Canada (April 20, 7 p.m. CT): Algerian-born coach Otmane Ibir, who played for the APSL’s Montreal Impact a decade ago, is coming off a fine tour of Jamaica, where it earned a 1-1 tie and a 4-0 victory against its host. The Canadians’ chief weapon is Montreal-born Wyn Belotte, a 6-foot-2 striker who is playing for French club Nantes’ youth side. Other key players are midfielders Jason DiTullio and Francesco Bruno and defender Liam Girard. Canada is seeking its fifth U-17 championship berth after competing in the finals in 1987, 1989, 1993 and 1995. El Salvador (April 22, 2 p.m. CT): The Salvadorans won the UNCAF U-17 tournament, edging Costa Rica on goal differential after both finished the round-robin event with 3-0-1 records. Honduras, host of the Group B qualifier in May, did not take part. Coach Oscar Benitez will rely on defender John Garcia, midfielders Emmanuel Leiva and Jose Miguel Ochoa, and forward Dennys Alas, who netted four goals during the Central American tournament.
