BY DEAN CAPARAZ FOUNDING PLAYER SITS: Philadelphia’s Saskia Webber was the league’s first founding player — besides injured Michelle Akers (Carolina) and pregnant Joy Fawcett (San Diego) — to start the season on the bench. Charge coach Mark Krikorian started Melissa Moore over Webber in Philadelphia’s season-opening win over San Diego on April 22. Moore made seven saves to shut out the Spirit, 2-0. “Melissa impressed the coaching staff from the first day,” Krikorian says. “She worked very hard and she earned the right to play. “Melissa has very good range and can get to an awful lot of balls off her line. She showed good shot stopping against San Diego.” Philly claimed Moore off waivers from San Diego, which has two of the best keepers in the league in Sweden’s Ulrika Karlsson and occasional U.S. national teamer Jaime Pagliarulo. When the Spirit had to reduce its active roster to 20 players, Moore was the one to go. Moore got the edge on Webber in preseason, as the two-time U.S. World Cup veteran struggled to stay healthy. “I had a pulled quad in my right leg in preseason — that was a problem because I couldn’t kick the ball — and then I had bronchitis when got to Philly,” Webber said. “My preseason was not at 100 percent. Melissa came in and did great. “But it was obviously incredibly hard, being the first game and being something I had a hand in creating. It was a tough one, but it’s a long season. It doesn’t matter where you start but where you finish.” Webber’s playing status won’t hurt her financially, as the part-time model recently signed endorsement deals with Sondico USA and Nike. She also endorses Acuvue (contact lenses) and EAS Nutritional Supplement.
