Amy Walsh became the victim of a crowded midfield when Bay Area coach Ian Sawyers waived the Canadian international on May 21. As the move opens up a roster spot for a foreign player, Sawyers is bringing in Danish national team defender Lene Terp for a tryout. The Atlanta Beat claimed Walsh off of waivers. Walsh, 23, started the first three CyberRays matches at defensive midfielder, but Sawyers replaced Walsh at that position with Brandi Chastain, who had been playing at left back. The return of Tisha Venturini after a two-game absence with a broken left wrist further congested a central midfield that also features Brazilian playmaker Sissi. The Bay Area took Walsh in the third round of last December’s Global Draft. “It was very difficult, because she’s a great kid,” Saywers said of Walsh. “She’s wonderful, has a good heart, a good personality and good character. If she’s going to play for this team as an international player, she has to be on the field. With Brandi, Sissi and Tisha back, she’s going to have a hard time breaking into the lineup.” Terp, 28, has 73 caps for Denmark and played in the 1996 Olympics Games and in the 1999 Women’s World Cup. The Danish captain also played in the FIFA World-All Star Game held in San Jose’s Spartan Stadium in 1999. The club expects the Dane to arrive in San Jose on Wednesday, May 23, depending on when she can secure a visa. She may train as soon as Wednesday or, more likely, on Thursday. The Bay Area next plays Walsh and Atlanta in San Jose on Sunday, May 27. She joins Canada teammates Charmaine Hooper and Sharolta Nonen on the Beat. Walsh also played with Nonen at Nebraska. To make room for Walsh on its active roster, Atlanta waived midfielder/defender Wendy Dillinger, who joined the Beat as a tryout player.
