The 2001 edition of the FIFA Club World Championship, due to be held in Spain this summer, has been postponed until 2003. The Los Angeles Galaxy was one of 12 teams scheduled to participate in the tournament. Its MLS schedule had been modified to accommodate the tournament in late July and early August. While the bankruptcy case involving FIFA marketing partner ISL didn’t directly affect the event — Brazilian-based Traffic controlled Club World Championship rights — it was cited by FIFA president Sepp Blatter as one of the reasons for the decision. There was no word on the venue of the 2003 tournament (the United States had indicated its intention to bid on a 2003 tournament), the size of the field (FIFA planned on expanding the field from 12 teams to 16), nor the participants (will the Galaxy and the other 2001 finalists still take part?).
