The Columbus Crew remained unbeaten all-time in international exhibition matches with an entertaining, end-to-end 4-3 victory over Bayer Leverkusen of the German Bundesliga at Crew Stadium on Tuesday night. Jeff Cunningham scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute as Columbus improved to 3-0-1 all-time in international exhibitions. Brian McBride gave the Crew a 2-0 halftime lead with a pair of goals late in the first half. After a number of near misses, Columbus got on the board in the 39th minute, when McBride fired home a penalty kick after a Bayer handball in the box. McBride doubled the margin in first-half injury time, finishing a Brian West cross from the right flank at the far post, after Duncan Oughton’s redirection. The second half became a back-and-forth affair, with Bayer rallying back to tie the game at 2-2 and then again at 3-3 less than a minute after John Wilmar Perez had regained the lead for the Crew in the 76th minute by beating Bayer keeper Maurice Gillen one-on-one and tapping into the empty net. Four minutes later, Cunningham — who wreaked havoc on the Bayer defense down the left flank from the moment he entered the game to begin the second half — raced onto a Dante Washington pass and fired past Gillen from a sharp angle in the left side of the box. It was Bayer’s first and only loss on its three-game U.S. tour, which it concluded with a 2-1-0 record. Leverkusen defeated D.C. United 4-3 last Wednesday (May 23) and the A-League’s Pittsburgh Riverhounds 6-4 on Sunday (May 27). Thomas Brdaric paced the Bayer Leverkusen attack against Columbus with two goals and one assist, while Robson Ponta added a goal and two assists. The Crew recalled a pair of former fan favorites for the exhibition, in Argentine defenders Mario Gori (2000) and Ricardo Iribarren (1996, 1998), both of whom now play for The Crew’s A-League affiliate the Riverhounds. Gori played the entire second half, while Iribarren entered the match in the 81st minute. A total of 17 different players saw action for The Crew.
