Boston earned its first point at home and moved to a 2-3-3 record (9 points) by tying Atlanta, 1-1, on June 6. The Breakers remain in fifth place, while Atlanta jumps over New York into sole possession of third place with a 3-1-4 record (13 points). Boston had lost its previous three home games at Boston University’s Nickerson Field. “Sometimes playing at home is not so easy,” Boston coach Jay Hoffman said. “At times we played some decent soccer. All of a sudden we were behind, but once again it was good to see our heart in the game.” Charmaine Hooper put the Beat ahead in the 30th minute of play. The scoring drive started as Hooper took a pass from Cindy Parlow, with her back to goal and just inside the 18-yard box. She then spun by defender Heather Aldama, held off Boston’s Kate Sobrero, and calmly placed the ball to the right of Canadian goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc, who made her second start of the season. The goal was Hooper’s third of the season and the first for the Beat in 197 minutes of play. The Breakers tied the score in the 64th minute off a Maren Meinert free kick. The direct free kick was a result of a Nikki Serlenga foul on Boston forward Dagny Mellgren. The Breakers set up the free kick from 20 yards out and Meinert sent the shot to the left of Atlanta goalkeeper Briana Scurry and into the side netting. The goal was Meinert’s fifth of the season, placing her in a two-way tie for the overall scoring lead (5 goals, 1 assist, 11 points) with Washington’s Pretinha and in a three way tie for the league’s goal scoring lead (5 goals) with Carolina’s Danielle Fotopoulos and Pretinha. Boston’s next home game will be against Mia Hamm and the Washington Freedom. This game has been sold out since May 15.
