The Carolina Courage handed Atlanta its first loss with a 2-0 shutout in Atlanta. In fact, all four road teams won this past weekend, including Washington, which had lost to Philadelphia last Thursday only to rebound for a 2-1 win over the Charge on Sunday. The Freedom leapt into a first-place tie with Philadelphia with 14 points from a 4-2-2 record. Philadelphia’s Kelly Smith and Lorrie Fair, out five weeks and one week, respectively, with injuries, returned to the lineup as second-half substitutions. Chinese star Sun Wen had to leave Atlanta’s loss in the 68th minute after a collision with Carolina’s Norwegian goalkeeper Bente Nordby left the forward with a sprained left ankle. Sun Wen has played limited minutes this season because she is working her way back to game fitness after offseason surgery on her left knee. Elsewhere, Ian Sawyers’ Bay Area CyberRays blanked his wife, Julie Foudy, and host San Diego, 1-0, while New York kept Boston winless at home with a 3-2 result. Brandi Chastain picked up her fourth yellow card in the CyberRays win over the Spirit and is suspended for her club’s June 10 trip to New York.
