The U.S. under-18 national team captured first-place of the 2001 International Tournament of Lisbon after battling host Portugal to a 2-2 draw on June 10. Earlier in the four-team round-robin tournament held June 7-10 the U.S., coached by George Gelnovatch, had beaten Austria, 2-1, on goals from midfielders Michael Enfield (Southern California United) and Ned Grabavoy (Chicago Magic). The U.S. followed that up with a 1-0 win over South Africa. Forward Dimi Colon (VfB Stuttgart — Germany), who was named the tournamentÆs Most Valuable Player, had the only goal in that game. A tie in the final game against Portugal, after goals from Grabavoy and midfielder Miguel Saavedra (Dallas Burn), was enough to secure the U.S. the tournament title.
