Kelly Smith, Mandy Clemens and Laurie Schwoy each scored a goal, and Saskia Webber made five saves as the Philadelphia Charge re-captured first place with a 3-0 victory over the Carolina Courage Sunday at Villanova Stadium. Philadelphia made the score 3-0 in the 74th minute after Courage defender Staci Wilson was called for a handball in one corner of the Carolina penalty area. Schwoy took the ensuing penalty kick and easily knocked it past Carolina goalkeeper Bente Nordby for her second tally of the season. Philadelphia (5-2-2, 17 points) snapped a third-place tie with Washington and moved one point ahead of the Atlanta Beat (4-1-4) and New York Power (4-1-4) for the WUSA lead. The Charge has won three of its last four matches and snapped a two-game skid at home, winning at Villanova for the first time since its opener on May 6. Philadelphia notched its fourth shutout of the season and also assumed the WUSA lead in goals scored (16). Each team finished with 15 shots and eight shots on goal. Philadelphia played without midfielder Lorrie Fair (right hamstring) and forward Erin Martin (hip pointer). Midfielder-forward Jennifer Soileau played the final 11 minutes for her first action of the season. SundayÆs match marked the last game Hege Riise and Nordby will play for Carolina until after the European Championships. The Norwegians, who will miss four games, are scheduled to return on July 10th. The Carolina Courage will look to former Dartmouth standout Kristin Luckenbill to mind the net, while the Norwegian pair is playing abroad. ôI expect four shutouts,ö joked Coach McDermott, when asked about her expectations during NordbyÆs absence. áôWhen we drafted, we wanted a keeper whom we thought could come off the bench and immediately start for us. We knew what we were doing, when we drafted æLucksÆ, and we are incredibly comfortable with the situation we have in goal. The Courage will travel to the Bay Area to play its next match against Brandi Chastain and the CyberRays on Sunday, June 17 at 5 pm. Also on June 10, the CyberRays tied host New York, 0-0, without Chastain. LaKeysia Beene preserved the tie by saving a Tiffeny Milbrett penalty kick awarded when Bay Area defender Lisa Nanez fouled the Power’s Sara Whalen in the CyberRays penalty area. “When I looked up and saw Tiff — the way she was facing with her body turned toward the right — I figured that was the only way she could go,” said Beene, who had nine saves in her second shutout this season. “I was right.” “ThatÆs the best goalkeeping performance IÆve seen from any keeper this year — not just quantity but also in quality,” CyberRays coach Ian Sawyers said. “She had several point-blank saves.” Atlanta won its first home game by edging Washington, 2-1, on June 9 before a large crowd of over 19,000 spectators. Beat defender Kylie Bivens was the unlikely hero, scoring her first WUSA goal in the 81st minute for the game winner. Earlier, Mia Hamm converted a penalty for Washington after Atlanta defender Dayna Smith was whistled for a handball in the Beat box. Elsewhere on Saturday, San Diego snapped its three-game losing streak to pound the Boston Breakers 3-1 at home. Traci Arkenberg and Mercy Akide, who made her first start of the season, scored their first goals of the season, while Shannon Boxx scored her second, this one off a well-struck header. “If he [San Diego coach Carlos Juarez] puts me in the game, I’m going to try my best,” said Akide. “It’s hard to come from being a starter my whole career. Now I have to get used to a different coaching style and when I get the chance I have score goals the way I did today.” June 9 in Atlanta ATLANTA 2 WASHINGTON 1 Scoring Summary: ATL — Emily Burt (Hooper) 30.
