China’s Sun Wen scored in the 32nd minute to tie the match at one goal apiece.
Wen took a pass about four yards left of the semicircle inside the area, and chipped the ball over the onrushing Briana Scurry. Brandi Chastain was unable to reach the ball before it went into the goal.
Mia Hamm had an excellent scoring chance in the 29th minute for the U.S., but her shot from 15 yards was straight at Gao Hong.
