Laurie Calloway has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the San Jose Clash, the team announced today. Assistant coach Francisco Matturano will assume head coaching duties until a new coach is named. Calloway, a former player with the NASL’s San Jose Earthquakes and a coach in the San Francisco Bay Area for some time, had seen his team struggle to a 5-10 record this season. San Jose fell 3-1 to Tampa Bay on June 21. “Laurie has done his best under difficult circumstances this year,” said Clash GM Peter Bridgwater. “The team’s performance has been affected by injuries, national team call-ups and other factors beyond the coach’s control. However, I’ve given the situation careful consideration and have decided to make a change. I have offered Laurie another position within the organization, which he is considering, because he possesses many excellent qualities besides coaching. He still can be a great asset to this organization.” San Jose, which is currently in fourth place in the Western Conference, hosts the Dallas Burn on June 28.
