U.S. midfielder Claudio Reyna — who made a bit of history by wearing the captainÆs band in Glasgow RangersÆ first game of the season — is nursing a groin injury. But he expects to return in time for RangersÆ Champions League match Aug. 22 and the Sept. 1 World Cup qualifier against Honduras. INTERVIEW BY MIKE WOITALLA SOCCER AMERICA: HowÆs your injury? CLAUDIO REYNA: ItÆs a small muscle tear in the groin. It happened in the first game of the season, against Aberdeen, but I played the whole game. SA: How long are you sidelined? CR: IÆve trained about three times but tomorrow would be too soon. IÆm hoping to be ready next Saturday. SA: So you wouldnÆt expect any problems for the Honduras game [Sept. 1]? CR: I should be fine. SA: Against Aberdeen you wore the captainÆs band … CR: Arthur Numan was subbed with about 30 minutes left and he tossed me the band. Barry Ferguson was injured and weÆve got other important guys injured, so I got to be captain for a little while. ItÆs really nice to wear it. You feel the pride. It was my my first time at Rangers, but I hope it is my last, because if all our players are healthy, I wouldnÆt be wearing it. And I rather have them healthy. SA: It must mean youÆre pretty high in the team hierarchy … CR: IÆve been here for two and a half years and started the whole time. A lot of players have come and gone during that time. WeÆve got a lot of team leaders. I just do my job as always. IÆm very comfortable here and I definitely know what the clubÆs about. SA: You won league titles in each of your first two seasons, but last year, Rangers came up empty — even in the cups. Do you feel more pressure? CR: Yes and no. Finishing second isnÆt good enough for a club like Rangers, and there is pressure. But the pressure is always there. I canÆt really say itÆs a lot different than it has been at the beginning of the past seasons. SA: In one of the games you missed, Rangers tied TurkeyÆs Fenerbahce, 0-0, at home in the first leg of Champions League play [for qualification into the group stage] … CR: We had a player [Michael Mols] sent off with half an hour left and still tied without giving up a goal. We also had the injury problems. But a 0-0 tie isnÆt that bad, because in the second leg a 1-1 tie — or any tie with goals — will get us through on away goals. As would, obviously, a win. But we know playing in Turkey is difficult and weÆre playing the league champion. We may have gotten the toughest draw of that round. SA: What position are you playing this year? CR: We play a 4-4-2 but the midfielders line up in a diamond, with an attacking midfielder, a defensive midfielder, an inside right and an inside left. I play the inside right spot. ItÆs the same position I played the whole first year, basically. SA: No more right back? CR: Probably not, because a lot of our injuries are in midfield and thatÆs where weÆre thin. SA: I read in The Scotsman that Rangers wants to sign you to a long-term contract? CR: WeÆre at the very beginning stages of negotiations. SA: WhatÆs your current contract? CR: IÆve got two years left on it. This would mean a whole new contract. Like I said, weÆre at the beginning stages and thereÆs a little bit of wait-and-see about how things turn out. But IÆm very happy at Rangers. Everything is going well.
