The USA lost its third straight qualifying game and slipped into fourth place of the Hexagonal by falling, 2-0, to Costa Rica on Wednesday night in San Jose, Costa Rica. The win makes Costa Rica the first team from the CONCACAF region to qualify for the 2002 World Cup. The USA, Mexico and Honduras are vying for two remaining qualifying spots. Mexico beat Trinidad & Tobago, 3-0, in Mexico City. Honduras beat Jamaica, 1-0, in Tegucigalpa. Rolando Fonseca beat U.S. keeper Brad Friedel down the middle on a 40th minute penalty kick given after Carlos Llamosa tripped Ronald Gomez. Before the goal Costa Rica controlled the play. Friedel twice handled powerful long-range shots and Chris Armas cleared a header — following a Tico corner — off the U.S. goal line. The USA didnÆt test Tico keeper Erik Lonnis until Greg Vanney forced him to tip a free kick over the bar at the start of the second half. But Costa Rica had several opportunities before and after Fonseca got his second goal of the night. In 69th minute, he scored with a 12-yard low blast after beating the U.S. central defense to a through ball. Hexagonal Game Day 8 leaves the standings at: 1.
