Chas Moffet of Truckee, Calif. asks: Can the goalkeeper be thrown the ball and touch it with his or her hands, or has FIFA changed that rule to where the goalie cannot touch the ball with their hands pertaining to a throw in? Mike Woitalla: The goalkeeper cannot touch the ball with his hands if it comes off a teammate’s throw-in. This is covered in Rule 12 (Fouls and Misconduct), not Rule 15 (The Throw-In). HereÆs FIFAÆs wording: ôAn indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a goalkeeper … touches the ball with his hands after he received it directly from a throw-in taken by a teammate.ö (If you have a question for a Soccer America Magazine editor, click “Ask Our Editorsö at the top of the home page.”)
