The United States clinched a berth in the 2002 World Cup finals with a 2-1 victory over Jamaica Sunday on a pair of goals by Joe-Max Moore. Trinidad & Tobago’s improbable 1-0 win in Honduras, coupled with Mexico’s 0-0 tie with Costa Rica, means that the United States does not need any points in its final qualifying match at Trinidad on Nov. 11. The U.S. team has qualified for its fourth straight World Cup finals appearance. Since many soccer fans were unable to see the match on television because of the breaking news of U.S. air strikes in Afghanistan, Soccer America’s Will Kuhns assembled a chronological account of the match that he and 40,483 fans saw in Foxboro, Mass: BY WILL KUHNS in Foxboro, Mass. Whether through poor planning or because they were glued to their TVs and radios, several thousand U.S. fans did not make it into the parking lot and through the rigid stadium security in time for kickoff. They missed a sing-along rendition of “God Bless America” led by former New Kids on the Block member Joey McIntyre. They missed the rousing national anthems of each team and the powerful moment of silence as starters each team embraced each other and hung their heads at the center circle. Sam’s Army and most of Jamaica’s estimated 10,000 supporters managed to stir up some atmosphere. 1st minute: The U.S. midfield lines up in a diamond formation, with Earnie Stewart the most advanced, Chris Armas the most withdrawn, Claudio Reyna to the right and John O’Brien to the left. The Jamaicans press aggressively from the kickoff and Jeff Agoos chooses the safe route by knocking a long ball up the left flank into David Regis’ run and Jamaica heads it out of play. 3: O’Brien immediately shows his guile on the ball, keeping it way from two Jamaican defenders in close quarters along the left touchline. Soon Chris Armas charges up that same space with the ball and is fouled about 20 yards from the end line. 4: Claudio Reyna and Jeff Agoos stand by the free kick. Reyna clips a low ball to the near side of the penalty area where Joe-Max Moore dives toward it and redirects it to the far side of the goal, beneath the late dive of Jamaican goalkeeper Aaron Lawrence. USA 1, Jamaica 0. 5: The United States comes right back at Jamaica, this time down the right side, where Landon Donovan penetrates to the top of the box and is dispossessed, but the loose ball bounces across the top of the box to O’Brien. The Ajax midfielder unleashes a hard shot without hesitation, but Lawrence saves it with a dive to his right. 6: A strong sequence of passes sucks Jamaica over to defend its left side again, but this time Chris Armas switches the ball to Regis, who plays a first-touch pass for Moore. Moore can’t place his turning, left-footed bid. 8 : Ricardo Fuller leads one of Jamaica’s first forays, but as Eddie Pope shields him off the ball, Agoos comes across to sweep it away. Pope soon fouls Onandi Lowe in midfield and the Reggae Boyz move that possession to an overlapping left defender, Robert Scarlett, whose sharp-angle bid is tipped over the crossbar by Brad Friedel. 10 : Starting at the 9:11 mark, Sam’s Army sings “God Bless America” again. 14 : Another U.S. foul, this time on the right side, leads to Jamaica’s first goal. Midfielder James Lawrence gets free from a cluster of players at the top of the U.S. penalty area to chest down Fitzroy Simpson’s looping cross. Unchallenged, he rifles a low shot past Friedel’s outstretched left arm. USA 1, Jamaica 1. 16 : The U.S. attacks with fluidity, setting up a wide-open Regis on the left side. His low cross is bound for Stewart in front and a certain goal, but the assistant referee has signaled Regis was offside. The game begins to sweep from end to end and Lowe finds his way into the box on a high bouncing ball. Reyna kicks the ball off his face for a goal kick just in time to prevent a chance. 18 : A speedy U.S. thrust is jolted by Linval Dixon’s full-body tackle on O’Brien, who lies on the turf, aching, but OK. No foul is called. 21 : Armas tries to compensate for a bad turnover by whacking Simpson and is booked for the offense. 23 : U.S. team is swarming around the Jamaican penalty area. Donovan’s short header sets up a Moore shot that is deflected. A set piece yields two crosses for Pope at the back post, but his centering attempts are intercepted. 26 : Donovan finds some room behind the defense off O’Brien’s chip, but his shot spins wide. 28 : Scarlett takes a long, high blast; Tony Sanneh does well to contain Ricardo Gardner’s dribble run in to the left corner. U.S. passes are less precise for a stretch. 30 : Reyna hears cheers from the crowd for stealing the ball from Gardner, then dribbling him and Lowe to earn a foul. 31 : Regis, O’Brien, Donovan and Moore combine beautifully, but Moore’s final touch is one pass to many. Reyna shows up on the left to dribble two players and dish to Donovan, but Moore is then whistled offside. 35 : Lowe, Theodore Whitmore and Gardner combine to create a chance, but Agoos heads it clear. 38 : Fabian Davis hacks down O’Brien. Play carries on for advantage, but Salvadoran referee Rodolfo Sibrian returns to issue Davis a caution. 42 : O’Brien slides Davis from behind and is fortunate to escape a yellow. 44 : Stewart earns a free kick deep on the right side and after Reyna’s pass eludes Stewart, Moore pops up to win back possession and set up Stewart’s 17-yard blast, which Dixon blocks. 45 : Lowe is tripped up on a dribble run toward the heart of the U.S. defense and Armas is fortunate to not see his second yellow card. 48 : O’Brien accelerates away from Lowe with the ball and touches it around Davis. His cross finds Moore in front, but Lawrence makes an incredible reflex save. 51 : Pope gets help from Reyna guarding Lowe’s dribble and Pope steals. 54 : Stewart leads a half-field jailbreak for U.S. but misplays his pass toward Donovan. O’Brien regains possession and Dixon flings himself in front of Stewart’s shot. Jamaica defender Marco McDonald lies down hurting, but re-enters. 57 : Scarlett is booked for a hard foul on Reyna. 58 : O’Brien steals from James Lawrence and curls a shot inches beyond the top left corner of the goal. 59 : Fuller gets by Agoos along the endline, dribbles back toward the penalty spot and falls — but no foul is called. 60 : Stewart’s long bid finds keeper Aaron Lawrence’s hands waiting and Stewart drops to pound his head on the ground. 63 : McDonald lying down hurt again, this time Tyrone Marshall replaces him. 66 : RegisÆ dangerous long ball for Moore brings keeper Aaron Lawrence off his line and he bowls over teammate James Lawrence. 67 : Lowe’s cross from the left wing eludes Friedel and seems destined for Fuller, but Regis deftly nods it out for a corner. 69 : Lowe gets free briefly, but Agoos sweeps. 75 : Paul Hall replaces Lowe. 76 : Jermaine Johnson replaces James Lawrence. 77 : Regis, O’Brien and Donovan set up Reyna, but his left-foot rocket is blocked in front. 78 : Referee stops the game and confers with both assistants. After the delay, a free kick is awarded in the U.S. end. 80 : Reyna passes to Donovan in the penalty area. Donovan cuts the ball back on his first touch and is taken down by Marshall’s reckless slide. This penalty kick will decide the game and perhaps the United States’ fate in qualifying. Although the U.S. team has dominate possession and created myriad chances, Jamaica has proved dangerous. Moore picks up the ball and tucks it under his arm. He looks at Stewart, who asks if he wants to take it. Moore affirms and sets the ball down on the spot. Fans of both teams are hopping nervously, biting the sweatshirt sleeves pulled over their cold hands. Moore steps up and places the ball to his right with the inside of his foot while Lawrence dives the wrong way. USA 2, Jamaica 1. Moore stares defiantly at Lawrence, as if to say something, but his jubilant teammates turn him away. 83 : The United States smartly spreads itself out and moves the ball away from pressure. O’Brien earns a corner kick. 85 : Referee mysteriously halts play again. 86 : Replaced by Jones, Moore leaves the field to a lengthy standing ovation. 87 : Reyna’s long drive is narrowly wide of left post. 90 : Agoos misses Jones with a free kick. 91+ : Agoos ends a mad scramble in front of the U.S. goal with a clearance. After four minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle sounds. While the U.S. players mob each other, coach Bruce Arena checks with his staff to try and find out the results of the other games. As the U.S. team dances in front of Sam’s Army, the word comes across the loudspeaker that qualification is clinched.
