Three more unbeaten records fell, leaving No. 1 North Carolina the final squad without a loss after eight weeks of the college women’s season. Third-ranked Santa Clara knocked off two unbeatens, No. 2 UCLA and No. 14 St. Mary’s, after ending No. 4 Stanford’s perfect campaign two weeks earlier. UCLA (12-1-0) was the first to go, routed Thursday night by the Broncos (13-1-0) as Aly Wagner scored twice and set up the other goal. Pepperdine (8-1-3) was next, as Lucianne Crenshaw’s overtime strike — and another superb showing from goalkeeper Ruth Montgomery’s — scored St. Mary’s a 1-0 triumph Friday afternoon in a battle of West Conference unbeatens. St. Mary’s (12-1-1) went down two days later, Wagner’s second-half goal giving Santa Clara a 1-0 WCC victory. That leaves North Carolina (13-0-0), which rolled over Clemson, 3-0, Thursday night for Coach Anson Dorrance’s 500th women’s victory, the last side without a loss — not one that counts, anyway. The Tar Heels celebrated Dorrance’s milestone by losing in their alumni game on Saturday. Cindy Parlow, Meredith Florance and Wendy Gebauer scored twice in the Alumni’s 7-5 win. Anne Morrell tallied twice for current Carolina. In other action: ò No. 16 Connecticut (12-4) got second-half goals from Casey Zimny, Alexa Borisjuk and Jennifer Amaio in a 3-1 home victory over No. 8 Notre Dame (11-2-1) in a battle of Big East Conference’s division titlists. The Huskies had already clinched the Northeast Division title; Notre Dame won the Mid-Atlantic Division. The Big East, like most Division I conferences, uses a postseason tournament to select its automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament. ò No. 7 Penn State (12-2-1) captured its fourth successive Big Ten title with wins over Wisconsin (2-0) and Northwestern (1-0). The Nittany Lions are 8-0-1 in conference play — the tie was with Purdue — and wrap up Friday against Ohio State. ò Stanford (11-1-0) won twice but No. 15 California was swept on the Pac-10 Washington schools’ Bay Area trip. The conference-leading Cardinal topped Washington State, 2-0, and No. 18 Washington, 2-1. Cal (10-4-1), 2-3-1 after an 8-1 start, couldn’t find the net against the Huskies (1-0) nor Cougars (2-0). Stanford (4-0) and UCLA (3-0), which edged USC, 2-1, are the only unbeaten teams in the Pacific-10 Conference. ò Freshman Esmerelda Negron’s overtime strike carried No. 20 Princeton (10-1-1) to a 2-1 victory in its Ivy League showdown at Harvard (8-2). The Tigers are 4-0 with three Ivy games to play; Harvard and Penn are 3-1 and Dartmouth is 2-1-1. ò Rachel Lieberman’s overtime goal lifted Cincinnati (12-3) to a 2-1 triumph over visiting Marquette (11-3) in a battle for first place in Conference USA. The Bearcats are 7-0 in C-USA action, Marquette is 7-1 and Charlotte is 5-1-1. Cincinnati plays at Charlotte on Friday. ò UW Milwaukee (11-3) claimed the Horizon Conference title with a 1-0 victory over Butler on Amy Oechsner’s first-half goal. The Panthers have outscored five Horizon foes, 12-0. ò An overtime own goal lifted Illinois State (11-3) past Evanville, 2-1, in the showdown for the Missouri Valley Conference title. ò Marist (8-7) notched its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title, beating Fairfield (2-1) and Canisius (2-0) as Libby Ludwig scored a pair of gamewinners. ò North Texas (11-3) clinched a share of the Sun Belt Conference crown with shutout wins over Louisiana-Lafayette (2-0) and South Alabama (1-0). The Lady Eagles are 7-0 in SBC play, with a victory over second-place Denver (6-1). Both still must play Florida International (5-1) in Miami: Denver on Thursday and North Texas on Saturday. ò Southwest Texas State (10-4) clinched the Southland Conference title with a 3-1 win over McNeese State and Northwestern State’s victory over Southeastern Louisiana. The Bobcats finished third in 1999, their first season, and second last year. ò Oakland (13-2-1), which last weekend claimed its third successive Mid-Continent Conference crown, fared well against in-state Big Ten foes, beating Michigan State, 2-1, and playing Michigan to a scoreless tie. ò The America East Conference title likely will be at stake when Hartford (12-2) visits Boston University (9-5-1) on Friday. Hartford is on top with an 8-0 record; the Terriers, who won the regular-season title last year and beat the Hawks in the tournament final, are 7-0-1. Each will have games remaining with Northeastern and Vermont. 10/15 RANKING … TEAM (CURRENT RECORD) … 10/8 RANKING 1. North Carolina (13-0-0) 1 10/18 Clemson (3-0), 10/20 Alumni (5-7, exhibition) 2.
