Janel Kaden was the hero for the second successive night, carrying Westmont to its second NAIA women’s soccer title in three years with a second-half strike Tuesday to beat Oklahoma City, 1-0, at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo. Kristi Peich beat two defenders and dished to the right for Kaden’s first-time blast, which beat Oklahoma City goalkeeper Amanda Loyall to the near post in the 62nd minute. “This one was more unexpected,” said Warriors coach Mike Giuliano, comparing his 1999 and 2001 NAIA titles. “It was just 10 or 11 days ago that we were crying because we thought our season was over. We got a second chance and these ladies made the most of it.” Westmont (19-4), from Santa Barbara, Calif., was upset by Cal Baptist in the NAIA Region II semifinals. It was awarded one of two at-large berths to the national championships. The Warriors’ attack was hindered when forward Karin Sullivan, the tournament MVP, pulled a muscle in the match. She continued to play, but her effectiveness was limited. Kaden’s overtime goal lifted fifth-seeded Westmont past top-seeded Lindsey Wilson, Ky., in Monday’s semifinals. Warriors goalkeeper Jaklyn Maag made four saves to notch her 15th shutout of the season and ninth in 11 games. Sixth-seeded Oklahoma City (21-2-3) survived two penalty-kick shootouts to reach the final, beating Oklahoma Christian in the Region VI opener and No. 2 Azusa Pacific in Monday’s semifinals.
