UC San Diego, college women’s soccer’s other dynasty, claimed another championship on Sunday, knocking off previously unbeaten Christian Brothers, 2-0, in the NCAA Division II title game on the Tritons’ field in La Jolla, Calif. Elizabeth Hughes and Kristin Jones scored second-half goals and UCSD’s defense bottled up the Lady Bucs’ NCAA record-setting attack as the Tritons (21-2) claimed their sixth NCAA title in seven years and third in succession. UCSD has won both Division II titles since moving up from Division III in 2000. It won five D3 championships — in 1989, ’95, ’96, ’97 and ’99 — competing in seven finals and 11 final fours. Christian Brothers (22-1), from Memphis, Tenn., rode a high-scoring offense to the championship game in its first NCAA appearance. The Lady Bucs shattered the NCAA record by scoring 162 goals, but they couldn’t find the net against UCSD — which scored 62 goals in 2001 — despite a 22-9 shot advantage. Hughes finished Megan Mendoza’s free kick into the box in nthe 47th minute, and Jones punched home a loose ball in the 78th. Junior striker Missy Gregg, who transferred from Division I Dayton in August, finished with an NCAA-record 73 goals for CBU. NCAA DIVISION II WOMEN’S FINAL at La Jolla, Calif.
