A deflection enabled Florida to stun UCLA in double overtime and Portland’s big second half finished off Texas A&M on Sunday as the field for next weekend’s NCAA Women’s College Cup soccer championships was set. Monica Hoyles’ 120th-minute strike, only her second goal of the season, bounced the Gators (21-3-1) past third-seeded UCLA, 1-0, at the Bruins’ Drake Stadium, sending the 1998 titlists to a semifinal date with No. 2 Santa Clara next Friday in Dallas. Fourth-seeded Portland (20-3) got two goals from both Christine Sinclair and Betsy Barr to overcome an early deficit and beat No. 5 Texas A&M, 4-1, on the Pilots’ Merlo Field to reach its sixth final four in eight years. Portland will meet No. 1 North Carolina in the semifinals, a rematch of a 1998 semifinal won by the Tar Heels. Freshman Linsey Johnson, from an Emma Smith cross, gave A&M (17-4-1) an eighth-minute lead with her 17th goal of the season, but the advantage lasted just seven minutes, until Sinclair tallied on her own rebound. Barr headed Portland into the lead in the 57th minute, diving to connect with a Kristen Moore cross, and Sinclair, a freshman, netted her 23rd of the year from an Erin Misaki through ball 10 minutes later. Barr added the fourth five minutes after that from a Kristen Rogers cross that Emily Patterson placed on her path. She has nine goals this fall. Portland lost in last year’s semifinals to UCLA. The Bruins (20-3), who lost the 2000 final to North Carolina, dominated Florida but couldn’t solve Gators goalkeeper Jordan Kellgren, who made a career-best 16 saves. The loss snapped their home winning streak at 26 games. Hoyles netted the winner in the last minute of the second OT period, dribbling into the box and firing a shot that deflected off Bruin defender Nandi Pryce’s hip and past diving goalkeeper CiCi Peterson.
