Kareem Escayg was again the hero for the University of Tampa, scoring the decisive goal in the 87th minute as the Spartans overcame defending champion Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-1, in the NCAA Division II men’s final. Escayg, a sophomore forward from Israel whose overtime goal beat SIU Edwardsville in the semifinals, gave Tampa (19-0-2) its third NCAA men’s soccer tiitle after making a midfield steal. He raced toward the Dominguez Hills box and unleashed a 25-yard blast that deflected off the back of Toros defender Sean Silveri’s neck and past goalkeeper Luis Morales. The Spartans overcame an early deficit in the 80th minute, with Jason Bell finishing a cross from Josh Huettich. It was the first goal Dominguez Hills (20-2-1) had surrendered in six games. The Toros went ahead in the second minute, with defender Joe Cartlidge heading home a Sean Lockhart corner kick. Tampa also won D2 titles in 1981 and 1994. Escayg was selected the final four’s top offensive player, and Morales won the defensive award. NCAA DIVISION II MEN’S FINAL at Tampa, Fla. Sunday’s result Tampa 2 Cal State Dominguez Hills 1.
