Gold Cup organizers got bad news before Christmas. Any hope of getting big crowds for the Gold Cup’s return to the Rose Bowl went by the wayside when Mexico announced plans to send a “B” team. The Mexican federation will leave its stars at home in return for an agreement with First Division clubs to release them before the end of the Torneo Verano. Only three players — midfielders Victor Gutierrez and Tomas Campos and striker Jair Garcia — played in qualifying, and they played a combined total of four games. The squad includes three players from Torneo Verano champion Pachuca and three from runner-up Tigres. Mexico Roster: Goalkeepers: Adrian Martinez (Santos), Omar Ortiz (Celaya). Defenders: Adrian Garcia (Toluca), Sidney Balderas (Tigres), Gabriel de Anda (Pachuca), Ignacio Hierro (Atlante), Alfonso Sosa (Pachuca). Midfielders: Victor Gutierrez (Cruz Azul), Tomas Campos (Cruz Azul), Erik Espinoza (Toluca), Antonio Sancho (Tigres), Antonio Noriega (Morelia), Marco Garces (Pachuca). Forwards: Joaquin Reyes (Santos), Adolfo Bautista (UAG), Jair Garcia (Guadalajara), Jesus Mendoza (Club America), Carlos Ochoa (Tigres).
