By WILL KUHNS MLS players who make the U.S. World Cup team will be released from their clubs May 1, according to deputy commissioner Ivan Gazidis. The U.S. team’s last game of the first round is June 14. It would play on June 17 or 18 if it advances to the second round, meaning that the earliest that players would return to action in MLS is probably June 22. “They will miss a bunch of games, but we want to give them every opportunity to train with Bruce [Arena] and we want to give every opportunity for the team to be successful,” Gazidis said. On average, MLS teams have seven games — one fourth of the season — scheduled during that stretch. Based on MLS players returning to action June 22, Soccer America compiled a list of each team’s games during the World Cup and the number of players it might be missing. (Note: not all of these players will make the final roster.) If the United States advances to the quarterfinals, every team except D.C. United and Columbus would be without their national teamers one additional game. (This list does not include a game national team players on Columbus and the MetroStars might miss on March 27 because of the Germany-USA game in Rostock or a game national team players on D.C. United and Colorado might miss on April 3 because of the USA-Mexico game that follows it in Denver.) Chicago (7 games — 4 home; 3 away) 5 players: Armas, Wolff, Beasley, Razov, Thornton. Columbus (8 games — 4 home; 4 away) 4 players: McBride, Maisonneuve, Cunningham, West. San Jose (7 games — 3 home; 4 away) 3 players: Agoos, Donovan, Mulrooney. D.C. United (6 games — 5 home; 1 away) 3 players: Pope, Williams, Convey. MetroStars (5 games — 3 home; 2 away) 2 players: Mathis, Howard. Colorado (7 games — 4 home; 3 away) 1 player: Mastroeni. Kansas City (8 games — 4 home, 4 away) 1 player: Meola. Los Angeles (7 games — 1 home; 6 away) 1 player: Jones. New England (8 games — 5 home, 3 away) 1 player: Llamosa. Dallas (7 games — 2 home; 5 away) 0 players.
