BY RIDGE MAHONEY, Senior Editor MORE GOLD: Carlos Ruiz scored his second sudden-death goal of the season to lift the Galaxy past the Fire, 2-1, Saturday. Ruiz, who has scored all four of his team’s goals so far this season, had netted a penalty kick in overtime March 23 to down D.C. United, 2-1. His strike extended a run of sudden-death success for Los Angeles against Chicago. The Galaxy knocked out the Fire in the playoffs last year with overtime goals by Pete Vagenas (Game 2) and Mauricio Cienfuegos (Game 3), and also eliminated Chicago in a U.S. Open Cup semifinal on an Alexi Lalas strike. Four games this season have been tied after regulation. Only the 1-1 result between Colorado and Kansas City on opening day hasn’t ended with a golden goal. FIRST GOALS: The Quakes Ronnie Ekelund needed 25 games to score his first MLS goal. Metros’ rookie Brad Davis scored in his second pro game. Ekelund, in his second season with San Jose, drilled home a pass from Landon Donovan in the 78th minute for the winning goal in a 2-1 defeat of New England. He did not score in 16 regular-season and six playoff games last season. Davis, a Project-40 signing out of Saint Louis University, struck in overtime after shots by Diego Serna had been repelled. BEST GOAL: Santino Quaranta’s blast from 30 yards into the top corner gave D.C. United a short-lived 1-0 lead in its 2-1 loss to the Burn. D.C. has lost two of the three games this season in which it scored the first goal. SAVIOR: Tim Howard pulled off a few superb saves to keep the Metros in the match until Davis’ OT gamewinner. Howard denied Brian Maisonneuve, Jeff Cunningham and Eric Denton until the Metros could gain control of the match. REDS: Daniel Torres (Columbus) and Milton Reyes (D.C. United) were sent off Saturday, which raises the number of sendings-off to six in 12 games this season. In 158 games last year 47 red cards were issued.
