Alessandro Del Piero’s second-half goal gave Italy a 1-0 win over the United States Wednesday before a sellout crowd of 25,493 in Catania. Del Piero scored after David Regis was stripped of the ball by Gianluca Zambrotta in midfield. Chievo striker Massimo broke clear and fed Del Piero for an easy goal. The Americans had plenty of possession in the first half but struggled after the break when the Italians brought on four new players, including Del Piero, Zambrotta, Marazzina and Cristiano Doni. Landon Donovan had the best chance when his shot in the eighth minute hit the post. The Sicilian crowd at the Stadio di Cibali whistled the Italians off the field.
