It seems like they’ve already been given a half dozen lifelines, but the Los Angeles Galaxy is finally starting to take its chances. A resounding 3-0 victory in the L.A. derby against Chivas USA Saturday put the Galaxy within three points of the fourth and final playoff spot in the West with two games to go in the regular season. This means slip-ups by Colorado and Real Salt Lake in the final two games could eke the Galaxy through to the Western Conference semifinals provided it wins its last two games. Colorado was thumped, 3-1, by the playoff-bound New England Revolution over the weekend, while Real Salt Lake was frustrated by a 3-3 draw away to Kansas City, a team that also needs to amass points if it wants to reclaim the final playoff spot in East from the New York Red Bulls. Saturday’s 3-0 victory was the first time in a long time the Galaxy responded to a must-win situation in the league. Goals came from Peter Vagenas, Landon Donovan and Alan Gordan; it was Donovan’s fourth goal in his last five games for the Galaxy. Coach Frank Yallop said he now thinks anything is possible in the final two games. “We’ve left it a little late, but as they proved last year at this club, things can happen going down to the last game,” he said. “Hopefully, we can take it to the last match. It’s here at home and we have a chance of making the playoffs if we get a win.”
