U.S. coach Bruce Arena has named 12 European-based players and eight MLS players for his 20-man roster to face three-time World Cup champion Germany on Wednesday, March 27, in Rostock, Germany. Kickoff at the Ostseestadion is set for 2:45 p.m. ET (8:45 p.m. local), and the match will be shown tape delayed on ESPN2 at 10 p.m. ET and Telemundo at 11:30 p.m. ET. Notable selections include Kasey Keller in goal over Brad Friedel with Tony Meola as the backup. Cory Gibbs, the 22-year-old defender, gets his first callup. He stepped right into the starting lineup at German First Division club St. Pauli after finishing up his college career at Brown University. Eddie Lewis, who scored the winning goal against Ecuador, remains in the U.S. squad even though he hasn’t played for English Premier League club Fulham this season. Frankie Hejduk, who’s in the same boat at German club Bayer Leverkusen as Lewis is at Fulham, gets another callup. Jovan Kirovski, who plays for English First Division club Crystal Palace, gets what may be his last shot at making the U.S. World Cup squad. Steve Cherundolo, whose club Hannover is leading the German Second Division, gets his first callup of 2002. Besides Friedel, who Arena said will be with Blackburn Rovers for a friendly in UAE, the other notable absentee among European-based players is Greg Vanney, who won a starting job at French club Bastia this winter. Bastia has a French Cup semifinal match the following weekend.
